A New Tattoo for Moby

Having sold over 20 million records in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Moby established himself as one of the greats of electronic dance music. In addition to dance music, Moby has developed a reputation as an avid animal rights activist who has been vegan since the mid 80’s. He has demonstrated his activism over the years through his music with the release of the album “Animal Rights” in 96 to also working with some well know animal rights groups over the years such as Farms Not Factories, Best Friends Animal Society and various other animal rights organisations.

His dedication to animal causes has influenced Moby’s tattoo decisions on what he gets inked on his body. In September 2019, he decided to get “Vegan For Life” tattooed on his neck by Kat Von D. "I’ve been a vegan for almost 32 years, so getting this tattoo seemed like a pretty safe bet," Moby commented. "Also, working for animal rights and animal liberation is my life’s work."

For his 32 year vegan anniversary, he decided to get the words ‘Animal Rights’ tattooed across both his arms. The linework for this was done in November 2019 and was later filled in by Kat Von D again at Xmas 2019.

"I’m a vegan animal rights activist for many reasons," He declared on Instagram. "But ultimately because I believe at the core of my being that every animal has the right to live their own life, according to their own will."

Moby proceeded to get several more tattoos that honour his passion for veganism. He has ‘VX’ which stands for Vegan Straight Edge on the side of his eye. Vegan Straight Edge is a lifestyle movement where alongside veganism, people live a life free from drink or controlled drugs and adhere to a cruelty free lifestyle.

"Straight edge because I simply can’t be a good activist if I’m lying in bed sick & hungover until 5pm every day," Moby stated on Instagram. "And of course vegan because i care about animals, human health, climate change, rain forest deforestation, workers rights, water use, famine, and all of the other horrifying things that are the result of using animals for food."

Moby got a cross on his neck as his first tattoo in 95. He has recently added to this piece with the words "Thou Shalt Not Kill," written above it. "I got my first tattoo, a cross on my neck, in 1995 when i was on Lollapalooza with sonic youth, beck, pavement, etc," Moby stated. "After 24 years i thought it was time to ask @thekatvond to give it an update. Wouldn’t it be remarkable if the worlds religions agreed on this one simple edict; thou shalt not kill? Thou shalt not kill humans. Thou shalt not kill animals. Thou simply shalt not kill."

He has since gone on to get another tattoo by Dan Smith it Captured Tattoo who is also a vegan practising the straight edge lifestyle. This time he has got a quote to represent his version of the Hippocratic oath. The quote is "Protect the innocent, defend the vulnerable." The Hippocratic oath is a code of ethics sworn by physicians. It has been updated many times but in its original interpretation it meant “First, do no harm” and later expanded to “I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm “
